How to Prevent a Leaky Roof

A leaky roof can be a much bigger problem than it would seem. Imagine being awakened in the middle of a very cold rainy night by water dripping down from the roof. Not a pretty thought, right? In order to save yourself from aggravation, and not to forget the cost, of a roof leakage, take steps to prevent it beforehand.

Roofing experts suggest the following ways to minimize the possibility of a leaky roof:

Keeping Vent Pipe Collars in Good Working Condition
The collars that surround the plumbing pipes protruding through the surface of the roof are called pipe collars. These vent pipe collars have a tendency to get deteriorated over time. The first thing you need to do to avoid roof leakage is to scrutinize these pipe collars every now and then and make sure they don’t have any cracks or other decay.

Keeping an eye on your Roof Flashing
The flashing is the metal based lining installed into the roof joints to seal breaks, if any, in the roof line. The flashing acts as a virtual prevention from a leaky roof. Roof flashing can be seen near and around the vents, the chimneys and other structures protruding from the roof. In order to avoid any water leakages, be watchful about any damage to your roof flashings. If you see any parts requiring repair, do it immediately.

Regularly Cleaning any Rooftop Debris
Your roof protects you from the various elements in the nature and environment. In this process it catches debris which may eventually damage its surface. This damage may or may not be superficial, but what it can do is disastrous. For example, a damaged shingle due to collected debris may give space for rain or other water to make a little pool on your rooftop, which may eventually seep down if not cleaned right away and cause leakage.

Cleaning your Gutters
Clogged gutters can prove to be really cumbersome in the long run. Clogged gutters do not let the water pass down through them and let it accumulate in the roof, which eventually causes a leak.

By all means, take steps to avoid getting a leaky roof, because you are not going to like it when it happens.
