The crowds have spoken—the future of the auto industry is electric. Sales of EVs nearly doubled last year and automakers are ramping up production to meet the demand. General Motors expects to sell more than a million EVs within the next three years and SunPower will be an integral part of this growth.

In October, GM announced a strategic collaboration with SunPower. SunPower was named as the preferred EV charger installation provider and exclusive solar provider for the automaker. Together, the brands are planning to develop a home energy system that integrates with GM electric vehicles and provides backup energy for homeowners.

“Aligning with GM enables us to pursue our path toward providing more Americans with whole-home energy solutions,” said Daidipya Patwa, director of corporate development and partnerships. “We’re tapping into new audiences that practice a sustainable lifestyle and the potential behind that is very exciting.”

Expected to launch in the Fall of 2023 along with the release of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, eligible customers can have solar + storage installed with their Silverado EV charger. Some systems will be designed to provide homeowners with bi-directional charging.

Roughly 80% of EV drivers charge their vehicles from home but only about 40% have solar panels. This opens a prime market for SunPower’s world-class solar systems, especially when EV owners learn the environmental and economic benefits of charging their vehicles with clean energy.

“Charging an electric vehicle at home can increase energy consumption by 30% or more,” continued Patwa. “Dealers have a great opportunity to show homeowners the value of going solar or expanding their solar system when choosing highly efficient solar panels.”

Can Solar Save you Money?

With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, there are multiple opportunities for EV drivers to save. Adding solar + storage will further increase those savings for their tax credits and utility bills. As a reminder, the following benefits are available for these clean energy technologies:

  • Up to 30% tax credit on solar systems
  • Up to 30% tax credit on energy storage systems
  • Up to 30% tax credit on EV chargers
  • Up to $7,500 tax credit on electric vehicle purchases

SunPower is continuing to develop resources that educate homeowners on these advantages while preparing for increasing demand throughout the rest of the year. Teaming up with GM will not only create more opportunities for exposure, it will also further SunPower’s goal of providing homeowners with an array of clean energy solutions that best suit their needs.
